Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Coming out of Safeway
After picking up a prescription
I was struck by the view
Of a father holding the hand
Of his mentally-disabled son.
Ruddy and red-haired
He walked a few feet
Behind his father
Who continued his devotion
To this child of God.
There are those who say
That this son has no right to live,
That he should be aborted
Or removed from the genetic pool.
But then, I must ask:
“How would the greatness of a father
Who would devote himself to this son
His life
His energy
His spirit
His example
Exist?
This Temple of the Holy Spirit
This vessel of God the Father,
The Son, and the Holy Spirt
He is not ours to destroy,
But to celebrate.
