Social Media Lessons from the Joplin, MO Tornado
The Most Current Real Time Disaster Information is on X

In these days with so much corporate media uninformed discussion of “World War III” (which we are already fighting in cyber), your attention can be diverted from the more probable even you and your family will face: a natural disaster.
When I used to inspect state emergency operations centers (EOC’s) in the late 1970’s, although I was there to check on their nuclear survival plans, we all played a game. The political hacks who got comfortable and high paying EOC leadership positions pretended they were preparing for nuclear war survival. Their plans indicated they were using the money for natural disaster survival.
Nothing has changed since then. Nuclear war is a highly improbable event but scares the bejesus out of most people. Natural disasters, in contrast, happen daily somewhere on God’s good earth. The likelihood of you and your family going through a natural disaster, for some in disaster prone areas like Joplin, MO, is a good statistical probability.
Do not be the confused mother of father standing there helplessly when your children ask you what to do. Love them in a special way by preparing for the eventual natural disaster BEFORE it happens.
Lessons of the 2011 Joplin, MO Tornado
There were many lessons about how to use social media to save lives and reduce the damage to property before, during and after a huge tornado hit Joplin, Missouri on May 11, 2011.
The remarkable fact about manmade and natural disasters is they happen over and over and over, but you only take notice when it hits your family, which it will. For those in the tornado alley in the United States, I repost this here on Substack as the lessons from all those years ago still apply.
NOTE: Americans are very moral, hard working, good people. I have seen this over and over in multiple disasters. You will see that goodness, even holiness, in the social media postings below that happened during and after this calamity.
Here are some of my Lessons from the Joplin, MO 2011 Tornado
X is the best way to stay current when a disaster strikes because it is updated so rapidly. (But be careful as the information posted on all social media, including X, in the first 24 hours may be false, some of it deliberately false. As Joplin, MO was the first use of social media to help families during a major disaster, it offers many social media lessons listed below for how to use it to save lives and property.)
Have X, Rumble, Truth Social, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media pages up and running BEFORE the disaster so:
People can use it to locate relatives, find friends, confirm who is alive and who has perished
First responders, police, mayor and other authorities can communicate with the public using social media tools (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and many others)
Identify and educate about looters, criminals, scams
Official volunteers know where to go and what to do
Citizen volunteers know what to gather and how to deliver it
Possessions can be gathered and returned to their owners
For more background, Mike Smith, the author of When the Sirens were Silent: How a Warning System Failed a Community has a first-rate analysis of how false tornado warnings mean many ignore warnings for real tornados here.
Also, see Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed Nature.
Each of these lessons, and others, can be found in the extensive Joplin Facebook postings below.
Here are links to provide background about the disaster. It is well worth visiting these websites now that time has passed. There are many recovery and getting-back-to-normal lessons to be found there.

NOTE: But not ALL Americans (or illegal aliens) are good. Criminals in both populations like to take advantage of disasters. For example, a “contractor” will appear who offers to rebuild your family home quickly but he needs a down payment to get started. He made that same offer to a hundred other distraught homeowners who just want to have shelter for their families. Sadly, the criminal will disappear and you and others are now a victim of both the disaster and the criminals.

Alabama 2011 Tornado Lost or Missing After recently going through this, please be careful where you donate money. Unfortunately, there are many who are not honest and will take advantage of this tragedy.
I know most people list the ARC, but there are many more legitimate organizations who will take and distribute money locally without the large overhead of a corporation or the risk of being scammed.

social media disaster response
One Final Tip
You will be emotionally drained during and after a disaster. This will compromise your decision making. Second guess every decision. For example, above I noted how many scam artists show up after a disaster. Be aware they are evil. You will have to discern when they approach you, and they will, who is honest and who is looking to take advantage of you due to your dire situation.
For some guidance on this reality, see these blog posts about when my house burned down in 2003 as well as a few other fire blog posts. They offer a few pointers on avoiding this problem.
It Was Nothing Poem, Our Housefire
The Joplin disaster was colossal, tragic. I remember it well. As a Missourian myself it literally hit close to home in every way.
