MET-TAGâ„¢ - The Triage Standard of Excellence Since 1976
The METTAG Triage System was invented in 1975 by Robert F. Blodgett, a TACDA official and a Civil Defense Director of Jacksonville, FL. He gifted the tag to TACDA in 1976 to financially support TACDA's civil defense publication, the Journal of Civil Defense.
Since then, millions and millions of METTAG's have sold around the world, and continue to save lives and support TACDA today. METTAG's are of the oldest and best quality triage tag in the industry. METTAG's save lives. Stock up today.

MT-137 Global Use Triage Tag
The Original MT-137 Medical Emergency Triage Tag is constructed of a high-density damage resistant synthetic material, and is printed using a special thermal printing process, allowing use in the harshest and most demanding field situations. Each Medical Emergency Triage Tag is equipped with a 30-inch elastic band, which is used for attaching the tag to the victim's body, usually around the neck or to an available limb.
The Original METTAGâ„¢ MT-137 provides first responders and rescue personnel with the standard triaging features needed to enable them to perform a prompt and accurate assessment of a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) victim's injuries and to easily record the data.
The MT-137 is used extensively by U.S. military units, fire and EMT personnel, as well as a large number of federal, state and local response agencies, including the Department of Defense, Department of Corrections, and state and local Emergency Management Agencies and Operations Centers.
For a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI), where multiple victims are injured and require varying degrees of medical attention, it is absolutely imperative that first responders have a quick, easy, and reliable method of assessing victims and assigning them with an appropriate triage or priority status, based on the severity of their injuries. The MT-137 Triage Tag has been tested and proven for over 40 years to provide this method.

Each MT-137 is coded with a unique sequential barcode serial number, which aids in the identification and tracking of victims and their belongings through the various phases of the triage and treatment processes, both in the field, and into the receiving hospital emergency care facilities. These unique serial numbers are conveniently located on both the top right and top left diagonal tear-offs, and on the lower color coded tear-offs.
By using standard graphic symbols and a four-color tear-off triaging system, the Standard Medical Emergency Field Triage tag (MT-137) is truly a universal tool, in that it presents no language or literacy barriers, and can be used in the field by anyone, of any nationality, with minimal training or hands-on experience. A policy of using METTAG™ products in day-to-day emergencies will automatically establish familiarity and provide faster and more effective victim triaging for an actual MCI or other emergency.

MET-TAGs and Emergency Exercises
I have participated as a role player in numerous mass casualty exercises. For example, below are photos for EPLEX where we practiced a plane crash event at BWI airport. The fire department moulage artists were remarkably talented. I played a 6-year old child who lost an eye in the crash. MET-TAGs were part of the protocol.
I offer this EPLEX simulated airplane crash emergency exercise post and another on this blog in hopes they help other Americans to exercise to reduce the loss of life, injury, and property that results from such events. Disasters, man-made and natural, are a part of everyday life. If we are smart and learn from history, we prepare for them so that we reduce the cost in life and property when they occur.

Half Blind, Still Alive
In a meeting she had called,
My contact lens popped to the floor.
As I stumbled blindly on the carpet
she instinctively came to my help,
took my hand, and led my finger
right to the missing lens.
She is one of so many women
in my life who, when I stumbled,
blindly took my hand, then led me
to sight or knowledge, light or life.
Half blind, I am still alive by them:
By their biology, their instincts,
their wisdom for how to counter
my risk taking nature
by insisting every time
I reach for the fruit
at the top of the tree,
that the fruit at the bottom
is so much easier to find,
and just as good.
Thank God
I swing from the vine
they patiently
knit together each day.
If any read this
one day…
Thank you.
