Elon Musk's Tesla Pi Phone Revolution (Maybe Baby)
Connecting Tesla, Starlink, Cybercurrency, and the Singularity
I hope the rumors are true and Elon Musk is making a phone that is basically a satellite phone at a more reasonable cost and with more uses. Once it is on the market, I will abandon my cracked screen, 6-year old Samsung Galaxy S9+ Android phone and buy the Tesla Pi phone if and when it becomes reality and not just rumor. The American tactical civil defense uses for this phone are innumerable and so obvious I will write about them when I own this phone.
My Satphone Story
In the early 1980’s, I worked for an American satellite company. The leadership presented a crisis in a meeting. Along with a Special Forces A-Team, their satphone just landed on a mountain in Granada during a military operation to save American medical students now trapped there…but they could not use it. Satphones were a new solution to maintain communications in remote areas the A-Teams often operated in…but nothing operates without instructions you can actually read.
This satphone was originally manufactured in Germany and then modified at the American satellite company where I worked. The problem was…the satphone instructions were in German and none of those on the A-Team knew German. None of them could figure out how to make a call to their support group or back to the Pentagon to brief them on their progress. Their first suggested “solution” was to find a company that could translate the 500-page user manual from German into English. But that would take time and they did not have any.
There was one meeting after another to develop a solution to the problem. As I was the only technical writer in the meeting of vice presidents and engineers, I suggested, “All they need to do is initiate a call and receive a call, right? We do that with the engineers on the back shipping docks outside everyday. We follow a simple protocol to make sure each satphone can initiate and receive a call. That is all these guys need. How about if I write up a simple one- or two-page instruction that gives them that capability?”
The vice presidents and engineers mostly smirked when I said it. But one vice president saw the logic and said, “Get it done, and fast. These guys need to make a call and our reputation rides on our enabling them to do that.” They had multiple contracts with the military and this little anomaly was causing heart burn in the C-Suite.
I took the satphone model the A-Team was trying to use in Granada out to the shipping platform, made a call and received one, and wrote up plain English instructions for how to do so. The engineers tried my instructions and verified they worked. The C-Suite signed their four signatures to the letter of transmittal. The instructions and transmittal letter were driven to the Pentagon and then flown to the A-Team on the mountain in Granada who were finally able to make a phone call over their satphone and continue with their mission rescuing the trapped American medical students.
Years later, in one of those wild synchronicity moments that happen in life, I met a guy at a party who was part of that A-Team on that mountain in Granada. I kid you not. He informed me that by the time he received the instructions, someone converted them to 3” x 5” pocket sized playing cards with plastic coating to withstand the tropical heat in Granada. We laughed and high-fived celebrating American ingenuity at its best saving lives and accomplishing the mission.
The Tesla Pi Phone: To Be or Not to Be
Morgan Stanley has issued a report speculating that Tesla may be working on a Pi phone. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) will likely make a smartphone, Morgan Stanley analysts believe. For some background, the Electric Viking also discusses the Morgan Stanley analysis of the potential Tesla Pi phone.
For some answers on the rumored release of the Tesla Pi phone, I asked X Grok Ai: “what is the tesla Pi phone?” Here is X Grok’s answer.
The Tesla Pi phone, often speculated upon but never officially confirmed by Tesla or Elon Musk, represents a blend of futuristic technology and Tesla's existing innovations. Here's what's been rumored or theoretically discussed about it:
Name and Concept: The name "Model Pi" suggests a connection to Tesla's naming conventions for its vehicles (Model S, Model 3, etc.), indicating it might be a significant product in Tesla's lineup. The "Pi" could relate to the mathematical constant or be a nod to innovation and circular (or comprehensive) technology integration.
Features:
Starlink Integration: Given Elon Musk's involvement with SpaceX, which operates Starlink for satellite internet, the phone might offer unparalleled internet connectivity, potentially even in remote areas or space, if we stretch the speculation to Musk's ambitions for Mars colonization.
Solar Charging: Tesla's history with solar technology suggests the phone could feature solar charging capabilities, aligning with Tesla's focus on renewable energy.
Neuralink Compatibility: While highly speculative, integration with Neuralink could mean the phone interfaces directly with the human brain, though this is far into the realm of science fiction given current technology.
Cryptocurrency and Blockchain: Rumors suggest it might support cryptocurrency mining or transactions, possibly even a new or existing cryptocurrency like MarsCoin or Dogecoin, given Musk's interest in digital currencies.
Enhanced Security: Speculation includes advanced biometric security, possibly leveraging Neuralink for authentication.
Hardware: If it were to exist, it might feature high-end specifications like ample RAM, significant storage, and a high-quality display, aligning with Tesla's premium product strategy.
Release and Price: Speculation around the release date has varied, with some suggesting a 2024 release, but as of the last update, no official announcement has been made. Price estimates range from $800 to $1,200, positioning it as a premium device
Market Positioning: If released, it would challenge the existing smartphone market by potentially offering unique features not found in traditional smartphones, like direct car control, enhanced privacy, or space internet connectivity.
Reality Check: Despite the buzz, Elon Musk has debunked the idea of Tesla making a smartphone in the past, calling smartphones "yesterday's technology" in the context of brain-computer interfaces. This suggests any Tesla phone might not be a traditional smartphone but something more innovative or integrated with other Tesla technologies.
The Tesla Pi phone, therefore, remains a concept fueled by Tesla's and Musk's broader technological ambitions rather than a confirmed product. It embodies the intersection of Tesla's electric vehicle technology, SpaceX's space ambitions, and Musk's interest in neural technology and cryptocurrency. However, without official confirmation, all details remain speculative, drawing from Tesla's existing tech ecosystem and Musk's public musings.

Why I will Buy a Tesla Pi Phone if and when it is Available
I remember back in the 1983 how amazing satphones were and how, due to their expense, were only available to yacht owners, top-tier military operators, big transatlantic shipping companies, and others who could afford them.
But apparently Elon Musk is about to manufacture an even more useful phone in a quantity that make them available to average guys like me. Unfricking real!
I live in West Virginia. When I drive up and down the mountains, I often loose my phone connection because there are so many dead cell zones. This Tesla Pi phone will solve that problem because it will depend on Starlink satellites and not cell phone towers to stay connected.
Who knows. I may fall for the usefulness of the Tesla Pi phone so deeply I will have to follow it up with the purchase of a Tesla Model 3, Model S, Model Y, or given the mountains all around here, a Cybertruck!
Maybe the Tesla Pi phone will be just the tool to outthink the singularity BEFORE it happens!
beware the lack of charging possibilities in the mountains if you consider buying an all electric car. might not be as useful as the phone you described. Especially in the winter. Jes sayin'. The phone sounds dope, though.
