“Lucy loves you and wants to skate with you!”

Three of Lucy’s best girlfriends said

As they laughed and skated past me

At the Simons Ice Skating Rink

In West Oak Lane in Philadelphia.

“Are you telling the truth?

I asked them as they sped away

Somehow even at 10-years old

Knowing truth and love

Were intimately connected.

They skated back and stopped.

“Look for yourself.

She’s over by the hot chocolate.”

I gazed to the concession stand.

Lucy was there, smiling shyly.

I went up to her, took her hand,

And began to skate with her in circles

Aware that her gloved hand was warm,

Her skin radiant, her blond hair flaxen,

And somehow she was changing me.

We circled and circled the rink

Holding hands and spinning

In a rhythm that was sweet

Steady, secure, and Spirit filled,

Our smiles frozen like the ice.
